What are the histological types of thyroid cancer and how is their prognosis?
There are 4 histological types:
- Papillary thyroid cancer: about 50-80%, all thyroid cancers with a good prognosis due to its high iodine storage and sensitivity of radiation.
- Follicular thyroid cancer: about 20-40%, with a good prognosis due to high iodine storage and sensitivity to radiation.
- Medullary thyroid cancer: about 5-7%, relatively less favorable prognosis, with no iodine storage and only low sensitivity to radiation.
- Anaplastic thyroid cancer: under 2%, with a very poor prognosis, no iodine storage, early tendency to metastasis.
