How are hot (and most commonly benign) nodules treated?
Hot nodules can be treated with radioiodine therapy and/or surgery. Prior to such therapy, the hyperthyroid symptoms should be treated symptomatically with drugs, which slow down the thyroid gland function (so-called thyrostatic drugs such as carbimazole, thiamazole or perchlorate). In this case, further iodine uptake must be avoided (iodine diet). In case of hyperthyroidism, iodine-containing drugs (e.g. eye drops) or X-ray contrast media may only be used after special preparation!
