Staphylococcus Project

Welcome to the Staphylococcus Project at Saarland University!

My name is Markus Bischoff and I am a senior scientist currently managing the "Staphylococcus project" at the Institute for Medical Microbiology and Hygiene at  Saarland University.

Initiated in 2001 by Mathias Herrmann, this group’s focus of research is on various aspects of the infection biology of Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococcal species. This includes basic research - such as into mechanisms of gene regulation and staphylococcal metabolism, host-pathogen interaction at cell and tissue level and experimental models of infection – as well as clinical research addressing issues related to antimicrobial susceptibility, epidemiology and infection control.

All research is a team effort and all the major and minor successes we have achieved over the years reflect the great team spirit in our research group – we introduce the members of our group on the “People” page. If you would like to join our team, please refer to the “Vacancies” section for opportunities.

An overview of our currently ongoing research projects and the team members working on them can be found under “Research Topics”. Please feel free to contact the Group leader of individual projects if you have any questions or suggestions relating to a specific project or would like to strike up a contact for collaboration.

Refer to the “Papers” section for a list of the publications in which our group has been involved over the past 8 years.

Our project is based at Campus Homburg (about 20 km from the federal state capital Saarbrücken), which is the site of the Medical Faculty of Saarland University. The Institute for Medical Microbiology and Hygiene provides services for the diagnosis of bacterial infections not only for the University Hospitals, but is also the main bacteriological diagnostic facility for the Public Health service in our federal state.

The main campus of Saarland University is located in Saarbrücken. The University prides itself in its international outlook and teaches widely in the fields of natural sciences and technology as well as law, economics, arts and social sciences.

We would be happy to receive your feedback. Feel free to e-mail your questions and suggestions to mikrobiologie@uks.eu or directly to myself: markus.bischoff@uks.eu.
