In immune cells, a tightly regulated Ca2+ signaling is crucial for an adequate immune response. Dysregulation of Ca2+ signals leads to an adverse immune reaction or to an immune disease. We are interested in investigating ion channel function in immune cells. By applying fluorescence microscopy, electrophysiology and biochemical approaches interlinking immunological and ion channels aspects we investigate consequences of disturbances of calcium homeostasis and dysfunction of channels related to calcium fluxes on the immune system. Our research uses primary human cells but also includes mouse models. Not only on the cellular level, but also on the molecular level we investigate the structure function relationship of the main proteins mediating Ca signaling using overexpression systems.
